Since the founding of The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency by the College of Community Health Sciences more than four decades ago, nearly 500 physicians have received specialty training through our three-year program. In Alabama, one of every seven practicing family medicine physicians is a graduate of our residency; 85 percent of our graduates practice in the Southeast. Today, we continue to address the primary care physician workforce needs, not only in Alabama and, the region but also in the nation. Studies show that more primary care is associated with better access to health care, better population health, and lower costs. Our residents thrive in vibrant academic and community environments, surrounded by family medicine physician role models as they learn to provide excellent, compassionate, and patient-centered primary care. We also offer post-residency fellowships for additional training in behavioral health, emergency medicine, geriatrics, hospital medicine, obstetrics, and sports medicine.
